- Deciduous shrub silnovetvisty, rarely a tree from the family of honeysuckle. Height elderberry 4 to 8-10 meters. Old branches and trunk of an elder ash-gray, core soft, porous. The leaves, ovate or elliptical sharpened to 12-28 cm in length, have an unpleasant odor. Fairly large yellowish-white or greenish-white flowers are collected in inflorescence - panicle long. Edible fruit juicy black-purple color with red-purple pulp collected in the large brush, ripen in July and stay until November. Most often, they do not crumble, and after all the leaves fall off. They serve as food to the birds.
In the wild elderberries growing in Ukraine, the Caucasus, the Baltic States, Western Siberia and the Far East. Cultivated in the towns as an ornamental plant. Elderberries allocates a large amount of volatile production, purifying the air.
For medicinal purposes
used berries, flowers, leaves, bark of black elderberry. The berries contain vitamin C, carotene, glucose, amino acids, tannins, trace elements. The fruits of elderberry is used as raw and in dried form.
